Residential Leasing Agent Education Requirements

  1. Be 18 years of age or older
  2. Be of good moral character
  3. Provide proof of a high school diploma or equivalent
  4. Complete 15 hours of education relating to the leasing of residential real property.
  5. Pass State exam
  6. Submit application and pay fee

Broker Pre Licensing Education Requirements

  1. Provide proof of age. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
  2. Provide proof of high school diploma or equivalent
  3. Provide proof of one of the following:
    1. Documentation from the Supreme Court of Illinois stating applicant is able to practice law; or
    2. Proof of completion of at least 90 hours of education
    3. Pursuant with ruling 225 ILCS 454 Section 5/27(a)(5) as of 2/1/2020 must complete 75 hours of education with 15 hours consisting of situation and case studies
  4. Take and pass the Illinois Real Estate License Exam with a 75% of better. View more information about the exam on the state website. https://www.idfpr.com/dre.asp

Managing Broker Pre License Requirements

  1. Provide proof of age of at least 20 years old
  2. Provide proof of a high school diploma or equivalent
  3. Must have been licensed at least 2 years consecutively out of the preceding 3 years as a broker
  4. Proof of one of the following:
    1. Documentation from the Supreme Court of Illinois stating that applicant able to practice law; or
    2. Proof of completion of at least 165 hours of education

Broker Post-Licensing Requirements

  1. Pursuant with ruling 225 ILCS 454 Section 5/27(a)(5 the following is required:
    1. If Broker was licensed on, or after 2/1/18 and on or before 8/8/2019 must complete 30 hours of education and renew license by 4/30/2020. Must also complete 1 hour Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Course
  2. If Broker was licensed on or after 8/9/2019 and on or before 11/1/19 must complete 45 hours of new Post License education consisting of three 15-hour courses to cover:
    1. Applied Brokerage Principles
    2. Risk Management and Discipline
    3. Transactional Issues
    4. Need to accomplish and renew license by 4/30/2020
  3. If Broker was licensed on or after 11/2/19 and on or before 4/30/20 must complete 45 hours of new Post License education consisting of three 15-hour courses to cover:
    1. Applied Brokerage Principles
    2. Risk Management and Discipline
    3. Transactional Issues
    4. Need to accomplish and renew license by 4/30/2022
  4. Individuals receiving their first broker license within 180 days preceding the next broker renewal deadline will be allowed to complete the 45 hours of Post License education prior to the second renewal deadline following the receipt of their license through 11/1/2020 without penalty or fine.
  5. Current regulations are: Broker licensed after April 20th, 2011, will be required to complete a 30-hour post-license course and pass an exam prior to the first renewal of their license.
  6. If Broker was licensed between November 1, 2021 and October 31, 2023, 45 Hours of Post License Education is required.
    1. Note: The Post License curriculum includes the required 1-hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention
  7. If Broker was licensed on or after November 1, 2023, 45 Hours of Post License Education is required to be completed by 4/30/2026

Residential Leasing Agent Continuing Education Requirements

  1. Renewal periods are every 2 years
  2. Licensees must complete 8 hours of education to include curriculum on the following:
    1. Fair housing and human rights issues related to residential leasing
    2. Advertising and marketing
    3. Leases
    4. Applications
    5. Credit reports
    6. Criminal history
    7. Handling of funds
    8. Owner-tenant relationships and laws
    9. Environmental issues relating to residential real estate

Broker Continuing Education Requirements

  1. By April 30th of even numbered years, broker's must complete a total of 12 hours of continuing education.
    1. 4 hours must be taken of Core Curriculum
    2. 8 hours can be electives

Managing Broker Continuing Education Requirements

  1. By April 30th of Odd Numbered Years, Managing Broker's must complete:
    1. 12 hours of Continuing Education
      1. 4 hours must be Core Curriculum
      2. 8 hours can be electives
    2. 12 hours of Broker Management Continuing Education

Illinois has extended the deadline for CE completion and license renewal for brokers to 9/30/2020.

IL has extended the deadline for CE completion and license renewals for brokers. All current licensees under the Department's jurisdiction whose license renewal deadlines fall within the period beginning March 1, 2020 through and including July 31, 2020 shall have up to, and including, September 30, 2020 to complete their continuing education coursework. These licensees are permitted to complete their continuing education coursework without having to attend courses in person and may take courses through interactive webinar or online distance education delivery means.
