Salesperson PreLicensing Requirements

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident alien
  3. Provide proof of high school diploma or equivalent
  4. Complete 75 hours of education at a licensed school by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission
  5. Pass the State and National Exam 
  6. Apply for a license through a sponsoring real estate broker

Broker PreLicensing Requirements

  1. Provide proof of high school diploma or equivalency
  2. Complete 150 hours of Prelicensure education
    1. Applicants must complete a 90-hour general real estate course
    2. Applications must then complete two 30-hour courses on Agency/Ethics and Office Management and related topics.
  3. Applicants must be continually licensed as a real estate salesperson for the 3 years preceding the application
  4. After submitting education certificates, and a completed Experience Report for Broker Application form the state will review. Once approved, the applicant will be mailed a Certificate of Examination Eligibility, which may be used to take the Broker Examination.
  5. Must be completed within one year of successful completion of their broker pre license education.

Salesperson & Broker Continuing Education Requirements

  1. Licensees must take 12 hours of education. All CE is due by April 30th of the renewal year. 6 credit hours of electives, 3 hours CORE education, 2 hours Ethics, and 1 hour Fair Housing & NJ Law Against Discrimination.

      4. Ethics ( 2 Ethics credits mandatory)
      5. Fair Housing and New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (1 Hour Fair Housing mandatory)
      6. New Jersey Real Estate Broker and Salesperson Statues and Regulations
      7. State and Federal Environmental Laws/Regulations Pertaining to Real Estate
      8. Legal Requirements regarding Escrow Monies and Financial Recordkeeping
      9. Real Estate Licensee Safety
      10. Real Estate Financial Literacy and Planning
    2. Elective Topics
      1. Commercial Real Estate
      2. Property Management
      3. Seasonal Rentals
      4. Real Estate Sales Full Disclosure Act and Real Estate Timeshare Act
      5. Financing
      6. Land Use
      7. Real Estate Valuation
      8. Foreclosure and Short-Sale Transactions
      9. Specific Aspects of Residential Real Estate Transactions
  2. All 12 credit hours for the current timeframe must be completed by April 30th. Any late submissions for CE will result in $200 late CE Fee.
  3. Once education is completed, allow a 10 day business day wait before contacting the Commission to see if education has been reported.
